It's been an interesting few days at LNFG, we are closing in on a few new signings and some exciting new reissues, we are in the finishing straight of the most complicated release we have ever managed, we are managing the usual spate of daft entitlement whilst also trying to shift a second hand collection that fell into our hands from a beloved member, it's no surprise that we are tired and arguably a little less patient than normal.
Today started well with an email from a customer, unhappy that he hadn't received a members varient of an LP, displeased that it wasn't signed and dismayed by the absence of the CD he expected. I took the time to explain very politely that he wasn't a member, didn't order in time to obtain a signed version and had not bought a CD. You can imagine how well that went down :)
The afternoon ended with a Car Crash of an artist submission.....
It's just after 3pm on my day off, just back in from walking Miriam, thinking about cooking dinner after a wee sit down, when suddenly my phone pings, it's a personal message from someone I have never met, it's a full blown signing request with links and descriptions, the full works. I see this and think "Oh FFS" I pause, consider whether to delete the message, block the sender or honestly reply. I opt for the latter and send a brief message which explains that it's Sunday, it's my day off, we don't know each other and he's using my personal messenger, I suggest that maybe it's not a great start.
Now at this point, if I were in his boots, i'd be thinking I have two options ..
(2) Discretely walk away and try in a more appropriate manner later
Nope - not this guy, he think's "I know what will win him over - I'll be a smart arse" So he sends a message which suggests that having never had the slightest reply from any label in his history, he was seeing my reply as a victory. Now obviously very pleased with what he thinks is a late goal taking negotiations into extra time, he then gets carried away with his new found confidence and makes the most appalling attempt at an apology - which comes across as him telling me that I am essentially thin skinned with a need to get over myself.
So I reply saying basically that his sarcasm had put the tin lid on us ever considering working with him and he replies "Righto Cheers"
"Righto, Cheers" ... Is it any wonder ...
We get a great many submissions from artists wanting to be signed by the label. So many of them are full of lazy platitudes. We have to plough through mountainous piles of nonsense at times.
"Hey I've been a fan of yours for ages" translates as - Ive just stumbled across your website.
"I love what you do for artists" means "I've never so much as bought a single record from you and I never will"
"I think I'd be a great fit!" - Oh aye, why's that ?
Anyway. On Friday after the briefest of discussions with our membership, we opened up renewals for the 2027 Unobtanium Membership - 30 LPs over the 12 months of 2027. We provided 5 interest free instalments and we are pretty much sold out of the 100 we made available.
If you like the idea of supporting the label whilst snaring a bucket load of vinyl, you can grab one of the remaining bundles right now. Those of you who already pay for your membership on a monthly basis, don't worry your place is guaranteed.
In other news, we are delighted to announce the signing of local Glasgow band Phanilla. If you happen to have caught either of the recent Frank and Walters shows in Glasgow you may well have caught them supporting. We will be revealing our plans shortly. Check them out in the usual places.
We have a bucket of things to follow this year, here's just 12 of them - Charlie Clarks debut album, that Alan McGee - who had originally planned to release such - described as "The best album I will ever release" is coming very soon and it's an absolute blinder. He supported Goodbye Mr Mackenzie last night. Billy Reeves new LP is an absolute stoater. Don't even start me on The Mackenzies, The Anchoress or The Rezillos!
